Drones in Forestry: Sustainable Forest Management from the Air

This National Forest Week, Canada's forest sector is celebrating a theme that hits close to home for us: Forest Pathways: Innovation and Sustainability. Innovation and sustainability are not separate ideas in forest management. Better information is what makes lighter-touch decisions possible. Here is what that looks like from the air.

Managing a forest sustainably means knowing what is happening across thousands of hectares, often in terrain that is slow, costly, or unsafe to reach on foot. The gap between what a forest manager needs to know and what they can practically measure is where drone technology has changed the work.

Monitor more, disturb less. Traditional ground surveys mean crews, vehicles, and access roads. Drone-based imaging captures stand condition, canopy health, and terrain from above, reducing the footprint on the land while covering far more ground in a day.

Check regeneration sooner. After a harvest or a wildfire, the question is whether the forest is coming back. Aerial survey data lets teams assess regeneration and free-to-grow status earlier and more consistently, so decisions about replanting or treatment happen when they can still make a difference.

Measure what the canopy hides. Some of the most important inventory data sits below the treeline. Handheld and drone-mounted LiDAR scanning captures stem counts, diameters, and understory structure that overhead imagery alone cannot always see.

Respond faster when it matters. Whether it is post-storm damage, pest outbreaks, or fire recovery, the ability to get accurate data quickly changes how fast a plan can be made and resources can be distributed.
