Six Ways Drones Are Already Working in Your Pit (And the One You're Probably Missing)

I've spent the last five years working with mining teams across Canada, helping them build out drone programs at Candrone. In that time, I've noticed something pretty consistent: most operations that bring in drone technology use it for one thing. Maybe mapping. Maybe stockpiles. And that's it.

That's not a knock on those teams. It's just that a single platform can carry a lot more of the operation than most people realize, from the open pit down to the areas your crew can't safely walk into. Here are six ways I'm seeing drones work across mining sites right now, starting with the one that carries the most weight for most operations, and ending with the one almost nobody's tried yet.

1. Getting Eyes on Places People Shouldn't Go

Underground tunnels and pit walls are dangerous, full stop. Until recently, there wasn't a way to assess that risk without putting a person in it. That's changed. A drone can fly into a hazardous area, collect the data your team needs, and come back out, without anyone walking into the risk themselves.

2. Picking Up the Slack When Your Crew Shrinks

Every mine goes through phases where the team on site gets smaller, reclamation is the obvious example. That's exactly when a drone earns its keep. It supports a reduced crew without asking you to compromise on coverage or data quality.

3. Taking Stockpile Surveys Off the "Things That Get People Hurt" List

Climbing a stockpile is one of the tasks in a mine site I'd rather nobody had to do in person. It's a good way to get hurt, or worse, and there's no reason for it anymore. With a drone, you fly a regular pattern over the pile, or with an enterprise platform, you draw a rectangle on a map and it flies itself. Faster, easier, and nobody's standing on a pile of material that could shift under them.

4. Catching Risk Before It Becomes a Catastrophic Event

Repeatability matters more in mining than almost any other industry I work with. Open pit and underground sites both deal with erosion over time, and the only way to catch a developing problem is to scan the same area, the same way, at the same level of accuracy, on a consistent schedule. That consistency is where drones genuinely outperform a lot of conventional methods, and it's what turns a survey into an early warning system.

5. Surveying Fast Without Giving Up Accuracy

An open pit survey with a drone might take a few hours, maybe a day or two depending on the pit. Faster doesn't mean less accurate. With the right ground control and RTK or PPK in the workflow, that data holds up. And because mine reporting requirements are so site-specific, having a repeatable, auditable dataset matters when a third party is reviewing your numbers. The exact flight path stays saved, so you can return to the same site later, even with a different drone, and collect the same data the same way.

6. The One Most Operations Haven't Tried: SLAM LiDAR Underground

This is the one I think most mining teams are missing. One of our best success stories used Emesent Hovermap, a SLAM LiDAR system, to map a tunnel that hadn't been used since the 1960s. That scan let the mine verify the tunnel was still safe, reopen it, and cut transit time through the mine by nearly 45 minutes. That's not a marginal efficiency gain. That's a tunnel that sat unused for six decades because nobody had a safe way to check it, until now. The Part That Doesn't Show Up in the Flight

Flying the drone is genuinely half the job. The rest is processing, pulling the pieces together from your base station, your drone, and your controller, and turning that into a map, a 3D model, or whatever deliverable your client actually needs. That's where a lot of teams get stuck, and it's exactly where we spend most of our time with clients. Our solutions team works in LiDAR, photogrammetry, thermography, and every other use case we sell hardware for, and we stay involved on the first job, through processing, and as your program grows.

If there's one thing I'd want an operations manager to take away from this: drones make your surveying operations cheaper, safer, and faster than conventional methods, and most sites are only using a fraction of what the platform can actually do.
